Cape Town offers many opportunities to the week-end hiker as well as those looking for something more adventurous. There are plenty of adventure tours catering for the thrill seeker and also many hiking trails on the peninsula mountains. Hiking can be dangerous if you are not prepared and especially if you are not familiar with the local conditions. Unfortunately we are now also having to contend with hikers being mugged on the mountain. For this reason it is recommended that you hike in a group. Sometimes when you are travelling it is not always possible to form a group as everyone seems to want to do different things at the same time. For a safer alternative, why not have a look at some of the local hiking clubs to see what they have to offer. One of the popular, long established clubs is the Meridian Hiking Club. You are welcome to join any of their local day hikes, as a guest (for a paltry fee of R10.00), which take place mainly on the weekend and sometimes during the week, on Table Mountain as well as the surrounding ranges. Have a look at the Meridian website.
